More people fear shark attacks than car accidents, yet the statistical disparity between those two risks is enormous. The Cognitive Biases That Hijack Risk Perception
The Availability Heuristic
We judge the likelihood of something by how easily an example comes to mind. Plane crashes are dramatic, heavily covered by media, and emotionally vivid — so they feel common. Car accidents are mundane and dispersed, so they barely register as a "risk" even though they claim far more lives. Your brain uses mental ease as a proxy for probability, and that proxy is frequently wrong.
Dread Risk vs. Known Risk

The Affect Heuristic

How to Think About Risk More Clearly
- Ask "compared to what?" Every risk needs a baseline. Don't ask if something is risky — ask how risky it is relative to the alternatives.
- Distinguish between voluntary and involuntary risk. We accept much higher risks when we choose them ourselves. Recognise this bias and account for it.
- Distrust vividness. If a risk feels dramatic and memorable, that's often a sign the media has amplified it beyond its statistical importance.
- Use numbers, not adjectives. "Rare" and "common" mean different things to different people. Seek out actual rates and frequencies when making important decisions.
- Slow down. Fast, emotional thinking evolved for immediate threats. Important risk decisions deserve slow, deliberate analysis.
